Bards on the MallIn November, 1998, I got a temp job in the Tower at the University of Texas at Austin. My plan was to follow in the footsteps of Austin's college rock phenomena, David Garza. Give students a daily dose of live music. I choose the South Mall of UT. Partially out of shyness, partially because I envisioned a day in the Sixties when fellow autoharpist, Janis Joplin, would be out practicing on her autoharp and carrying it every where she went. So every day, I brought my autoharp to work. And every day, I took it down to the South Mall and practiced. In January, a student came up to me and asked if I wanted to perform at a Renaissance Festival...something I had dreamt of just five months earlier. I hooked up with Andrew and in March we began our daily toil and practice. We played every day on the South Mall come rain or shine. We attracted photographers and the local TV station. The word spread like rapid-fire, even reaching other campuses in Texas (UT Arlington wrote an article on us). People either loved us or they hated us. And come September we had up to a hundred people out enjoying the sunshine and enjoying the music. Well, by April, 2000, we were burnt out. We weren't about to play another summer at UT (and with temperatures over a 100 degrees I'm glad we didn't). Meanwhile, I was (am) on the lookout for a new job. But honestly, I miss it. I miss the smiles. I miss the comments ("You made my day":) It really makes it all worth while. So three months after we decided to give it up...we're heading back! No, it won't be a daily thing. T'was a bit difficult especially as my job hunt progresses. But we will perform every Friday (and with a bit of Irish luck, there will still be free food out there) for as long as we possibly can. Please do us a favor. Drop by. Say hi. Listen. Relax. Talk to us. Make requests. Sign our guestbook and tell us what you think of us and our music. Tell your friends and let us sweep you away to Ireland. Thank you. Who: The
